Katelyn Bierrum

Known in the Office as: The Apprentice

Actual Name: Katelyn (Katie) Bierrum

Job Title: Intern

What type of project at K&W did you have the most fun with? Why? Community-based design. They include a lot of amenities such as splash pads, community centers, water features…we even designed a canoe launch once. I love designing places that people really want to live in

What was your first job? I bussed tables at a Mexican restaurant called Poblanos, I was 16 years old

Which college do you attend? I’m from Indiana and I attend Purdue University. I will graduate in May 2017 with a Bachelors in Landscape Architecture and a Minor in Horticulture, Natural Resources & Environmental Science

Tell me 3 passions of yours. I’m passionate about designing green-ways that connect neighborhoods together, sustainable plants and exposing people to a better quality of life. I’m also passionate about architecture.

What is your favorite ice cream flavor? Double chocolate

What’s your favorite outdoor space to design? Community parks

What show can you binge watch? Gilmore Girls

What is your favorite summer activity? Camping. Every summer, my family and I go camping back home in Indiana. I enjoy the outdoors & we spend our time fishing, cooking by the fire, hiking & swimming.

Would you rather have the ability to fly or be invisible? Fly because then I can fly anywhere and everywhere

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go? Everywhere and I would use my flying super powers to get there

Morning or night? Morning

Pizza or tacos? Pizza

What do you like on your pizza? Meat Lovers! I want pepperoni, bacon, sausage, everything!

You’ve spent an entire year in Houston and with K&W. Tell me a little bit about your time here. I spent my first 8 months with Project Manager, Casey and ended my internship with Project Manager, Cathleen. I was able to touch a little bit of everything and learn from everyone. Casey & Cat are both great role models. They are great at communicating and are well-balanced in everything they do. I plan to keep in touch with them. I loved my time here at K&W and in Houston.

What advice would you give someone who wants to be in this profession? Be adamant about working through every design to find a solution. It can get complicated but just work it through.
