Known in the Office as: Shutterbug Techie
Actual Name: Manjot (Manny) Jawa
Job Title: Photographer
What is your role at K&W? I’m a part-time photographer for K&W. I spend most of my time photographing our projects. I also take photos around the office like the paparazzi. We are currently working on a little project right now that’s requiring me to try out my video editing skills also… stay tuned for that one!
Which college did you attend? I received my Bachelors from Sam Houston State University and I am currently looking into grad schools to pursue my Masters next year.
Which project at K&W has been your favorite to shoot so far? 1221 Broadway. It is a massive multifamily project in San Antonio with a real urban feel to it. It was one of the first multifamily projects I shot and it helped me to really understand how designers map out a space. There was so much to shoot at this project including courtyards, pools, parks, etc. The design of the entire complex was interesting and there were many surprises behind every corner. I like the story behind the project also. It is an adaptive, re-use project and I like that the designers took something old and made it new by reusing old materials. It was a nice mesh between my own personal style and work.
What do you like about photographing landscape architecture? There are no faces! I don’t mean that in a negative way either. When I take portraits or shoot something with people in it, it’s easier for the viewer to identify with the image because there is emotion in faces. The first thing a viewer tends to look at in a portrait is the eyes, which bring the emotion to it. When you shoot landscape architecture, you have to find the emotion. You have to find what will draw people into the image and make them love it. It’s more challenging.
Tell me some passions of yours. I like space, technology, live music, alternative photo processes and graphic design. In sum, I believe in learning something new every day. Don’t ever stop learning because then, what are you doing really?
What is your favorite part about working at K&W? The flexibility. I honestly hate sitting in an office all day. I get antsy sitting at my desk; I like to be moving around. I know being in and out of the office is part of my job but the work/life balance is part of what I love.
How do you spend your free time? I work for Cy-Fair ISD part-time also doing some audio visual work so I spend much of my time working. When I’m not working though, you can find me riding my bike, listening to music and taking photos of old abandoned buildings or anything unique I find. You never know when something might not be there anymore so it’s important to me to always take the shot.
What food is your weakness? Breakfast and desserts! Have you ever had waffles and ice cream together?
What is one thing you own that you cannot live without? As much as I love sugar, I could not live without music.
If you could live to see one future event, what would it be? I grew up a huge Star Trek fan and I would really like to travel in space because of it. It’s something about the beauty of space and how it’s infinite that draws me in.
If you could be any animal in the world, what would you be? I would like to be the first flying penguin.
Where do you find inspiration for your photographs? Nowhere but everywhere. There is this quote by Graphic Designer, Milton Glaser that reads, “Art is whatever remains.” To me that means, taking time to explore the world and finding the beauty and story in what you see. I know I can’t be everywhere and visit every place around the world but wherever I happen to be, I will try to find the art in it.
Pancakes or waffles? Waffles but it has to be waffles made right. They have to be thick and fluffy.
Ferris wheel or roller coaster? Skydiving
