Known in the Office as: Down to Earth Drafter
Actual Name: Justin Seale
Which project at K&W do you feel most proud of? Why? A multifamily project called Braeswood, it is currently under construction. It was my first real opportunity to take the lead on a project that went through all of our phases of design from start to finish. I really cant wait to see it once construction is completed.
Which college did you attend? I attended Purdue University and I graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture.
Why landscape architecture? I didn’t know about the program when I started school at Purdue. I learned about it through friends. Landscape Architecture is the perfect blend of creativity and technical work. It was a perfect balance.
Tell me some passions of yours. My wife and I have a 1 ½ year old German Shepherd mix. Her name is Luna and she is big part of our lives. We enjoy being outdoors and hiking. There are a few state parks in Houston we have been to but Colorado is the place to be! I enjoy sports also.
What is your favorite sports team? I am a college football fan and I am really excited football is back. I would say my favorite sports team is a tie between Purdue Boilermakers and The Tennessee Volunteers.
Where did you meet your spouse? I met my spouse in college at Purdue. We both attended the same church.
What type of projects do you work on at K&W? I’ve had the opportunity to work under every project manager at K&W. I’ve worked with Wes on educational facilities, Casey on Master Planned Communities and now I currently work on Cat’s team on multifamily projects.
Do you enjoy working on such a wide range of projects? Yes, moving around keeps me well-rounded.
What is your favorite part about working at K&W? The environment and people. The people are a lot of fun to work with. I also don’t have to worry about working 60 hour weeks because Darin and Thad believe in a work | life balance. We work hard here but we are expected to go home and be with our families and enjoy our lives.
Would you rather speak any language fluently or be able to talk to animals? Talk to animals
Have you ever broken a bone? No, but I have dislocated a few joints playing football and wrestling.
What is your favorite ice cream flavor? Phish Food by Ben & Jerry’s. It is awesome! It’s chocolate ice cream with caramel and marshmallow swirls. Ben & Jerry’s is a Vermont staple and a portion of the proceeds for this particular flavor go towards Vermont’s Lake Champlain Watershed.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned at K&W? How important a work | life balance is. Darin and Thad’s values helped me to really appreciate that.
What’s your favorite outdoor space to design? I designed a recreational area, which included a playground and splash pad for a master planning community and I really enjoyed it. I also helped design an amenity deck for a corporate campus. It had a basketball court, a putting green, a tennis court and other outdoor amenities. It was fun figuring out how to incorporate those types of amenities into a campus.
What advice would you give someone who wants to be in this profession? This profession is a blend of engineering and creativity/design. My advice would be to take the time to learn the technical aspects to this profession. Your design has to work and be practical. I view it as an iceberg. The design looks great on the top but the most important aspects are not seen.
Beach or pool? I would say beach but it depends on the beach. I went on a family vacation to the Virgin Islands and we went snorkeling on all these small islands. It was a lot of fun and cool to see.
Pancakes or waffles? That’s a good question… chicken and waffles and blueberry pancakes
