Known in the Office as: Design Tycoon
Actual Name: Tyson Gaspard
Job Title: Senior Associate
What is your role at K&W? I’m a Senior Associate and act as the point of contact for the design team. I work closely with Thad Kudela, and I typically manage projects through the schematic design phase. It is my job to set the initial site design and handle site control.
Which college did you attend? I am a member of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Class of 2009.
Which project at K&W do you feel most proud of? Why? We have had the opportunity to do some work on the Texas A&M campus which I am very proud of. It is an honor to be able to walk around my Alma Mater and say that I helped create those spaces.
Tell me some passions of yours. I love creating spaces, so much so that I used to draw floor plans as a kid and build extensive Lego worlds. I also used to spend hours playing a computer game called The Sims. I didn’t care to play with the people but I would buy all the expansion packs and build houses in all of the neighborhoods. Aside from design, I’m very active in my church. I believe in giving back and serving my community with a purpose and through my leadership at church, I’m able to do that. I’m also very competitive and active in sports. I like to run and I’m currently playing on intramural volleyball and softball teams.
What’s your favorite outdoor space to design? That’s not an easy question to answer. I’m involved in most of our on-structure projects and I really like the challenges and creative solutions that come along with that. However, I love to work on larger mixed-use projects as well. Many of our mixed-use projects include retail, office and multifamily buildings. I enjoy the challenge of marrying all of the different uses and figuring out how to incorporate active lifestyle components, iconic landmarks, unique amenities and the complex circulation systems.
What is something about yourself that no one knows? I’m really into cars. I follow many auto blogs and helped about 14 people in the last year or so pick out which vehicles they should buy. I also grew up riding horses; I could still saddle a horse today.
What do you like on your pizza? I love Hawaiian pizza with pineapples and Canadian bacon.
What show can you binge watch? I’m currently into a Netflix original called Stanger Things.
What is your dream car? Like I said, I really love cars, so I have a lot of favorites but our office is right next to a Jaguar dealership and every day I see a Jaguar F-Pace and think, yeah I wouldn’t mind driving that.
What is your favorite holiday? Why? Christmas. It’s just a special season, and I take off work for a few days and spend a lot of time with my family.
What is your favorite part about working at K&W? I would have to say the work | life balance. I come to work and I work hard but I’m able to leave and pursue things outside of my job as well.
Why landscape architecture? Growing up, one of my uncles was a home builder and worked on subdivisions. I was very interested in his work and that initially sparked my interest.
What advice would you give someone who wants to be in this profession? Learn to be flexible and see that this industry, as a whole, is very collaborative. Several ideas and thoughts go into a project from start to finish.
Morning or night? Night. Unfortunately, I am not a morning person.
Ice cream or snow cone? Neither, popsicles.
